Joe Edward Shelton's Obituary
Joe Edward Shelton was born at home in Corley, Texas to James Ernest Shelton and Julie Mae Shelton (Stone) on April 12, 1930. Growing up on the family farm Joe loved to hunt and fish in the Sulphur River Bottom. Joe graduated high school in 1948 and two weeks later he joined the U.S. Navy. In 1950, Joe took advantage of the Navy’s NavCad Program and received his Navy wings in 1951. During his sixteen years in the Navy Joe flew SNJ’s, SNB’s, Hellcats, Corsairs, Cougars and R5D’s. His favorite naval aircraft was the FG-1D Corsair. Joe is also a founding member of the Navy Squadron VF-103. In 1955, as a result of a blind date and a three month courtship; Joe married the love of his life Faye Marlar. Together they raised two sons Greg and Lee Shelton. Joe was hired by American Airlines in 1955 and during his thirty year career he flew Convair 240’s, DC-6’s, DC-7’s, Boeing 707’s and Boeing 727’s. Joe’s favorite airliner was the Boeing 707. Much of Joe’s free time was spent remodeling his family home. After retiring from American Airlines in 1985, Joe produced oil in Northeast Oklahoma. Joe is preceded in death by his beloved wife of sixty-one years, Erma “Faye” Shelton; his father, James Ernest Shelton and mother, Julia Mae Shelton. Joe is survived by his two sons, Greg Shelton and fiancé Ashley Key, Lee Shelton and wife Julie; grandson, Tyler Shelton; his sisters, Jamie M. Ernst and Pat A. Wommack and numerous other loving family members and friends. Services have been entrusted to Floral Haven Funeral Home, Crematory and Memorial Gardens, 6500 S 129th E Avenue in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma 74012. Visitation will be heldSunday, June 5, 2016 from 12:00PM to 8:00PM with family receiving visitors from 4:00PM to 7:00PM at Floral Haven Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held Monday, June 6, 2016 at 3:00PM at Floral Haven Funeral Home Chapel with a graveside service following at Floral Haven Memorial Gardens.
