John Samuel Blessing's Obituary
John Blessing passed away in Denver, CO on October 18, 2022.
He was beloved for his integrity, generosity, hospitality, and original sense of humor.
John was born in Fort Worth, TX in 1930 to John S. and Martha Muir Blessing, Sr. He attended North Side High School in Ft. Worth and the University of North Texas in Denton. John served in the United States Air Force from 1950-1956. While serving as a First Lieutenant in Tachikawa, Japan during the Korean War, he met Gloria Nielsen. They married in Luck, WI in 1955 and were stationed in Homestead, FL.
In 1956, John and Gloria moved to Oklahoma City where John started his 32-year tenure as a manufactures’ rep for Panther Chemical Company. He was transferred to Tulsa in 1958. In 1963, John completed his BS in Business from the University of Tulsa. In 1988, John was the founding partner of Lighting, Inc. in Tulsa with his son, Mitchell. He retired from their business in 2007. John served on the Tulsa County Excise Board, Board of Adjustments, and Board of Equalization. He was also involved in many city, county, state, and national political campaigns. John was an active member of Fellowship Lutheran Church and previously, Bethany Lutheran Church. He was an advocate of higher education for his children, employees, and friends. John would warmly greet family, business associates, and strangers alike. He was also very proud of his son’s and grandson’s accomplishments of becoming Eagle Scouts in the Boy Scouts of America.
John was an involved father of his three children, and an adoring husband, especially when caring for his beloved Gloria in her final years. Shortly after Gloria’s passing, John moved to Denver, CO. He was preceded by his sisters: Myrtle Hirstine of Fort Worth, TX, Mary Townsend of Los Angeles, CA, Doris Lund of Fort Worth, TX, and Dorothy Garland of Fort Worth, TX. John is survived by his three children: Karne & Jeff Beighle of Denver, CO, Shelley & Greg Bay of Summerlin, NV, and Mitchell & Kelly Blessing of Tulsa; his five grandchildren: Kyle Beighle, Paige & Ryan Schwab, Karmen & Eli Golden Bough, Eric & Hartley Blessing, and Nicole Blessing; his sister-in-law Bonita DuFresne of St. Paul,
MN, and many nieces and nephews. John’s memorial service to celebrate his life of 91 years will be at
Fellowship Lutheran Church on Monday, November 14, at 11:00am. Contributions in honor of John are welcomed for Fellowship Lutheran Church Mission Endowment Trust (https://flctulsa.org/give) or Happy Hands Education Center, a school for children with hearing loss (https://happyhands.org/).
