John Wayne Highfill, born on May 26, 1943, in San Pedro, CA, a beloved husband, devoted father, cherished grandfather, and treasured friend, passed away peacefully at his home in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, on June 15, 2025, at the age of 82.
John is survived by his loving, devoted wife, Marlene, who was his steadfast companion and best friend through every adventure. He was a father to Jeffery, Dr. Briar-Chelsea, John Jr., Nicole, Michael, Gary, and Rebecca Highfill, a grandfather, and great grandfather. Also survived by a brother, Bill Foreman. John’s stories and laughter filled family gatherings with joy, where his high energy, jokes, and humor was the life of the party.
Beyond his family, John was known as a legend in the numismatic world. He started the Oklahoma Coin Exchange in 1976, founded the National Silver Dollar Round Table in 1982 and authored the iconic Comprehensive U.S. Silver Dollar Encyclopedia. His colleagues remember him not just for his expertise, but for his generosity, jokes, mentorship, and genuine care for others.
John’s love of adventure extended far beyond his home and career - he was an avid world traveler who journeyed to virtually every continent, visiting over 100 countries throughout his lifetime. Whether exploring the bustling markets of Asia, marveling at the historic wonders of Europe, visiting North African ports, experiencing the vibrant cultures of South America, or taking in the penguin-filled beauty of the Falkland Islands, John embraced every new place and its people with curiosity and joy.
John’s life was filled with many passions including signing with the Baltimore Orioles, then his service in the United States Air Force, and later the VP of ABC Records in the music industry. He also spent decades educating and inspiring fellow numismatists.
