I remember spending the night at the Martin’s when I was in elementary school and cutting up smoked turkey drumsticks for soup with John. I’d never had smoked turkey drumsticks and I thought it was AMAZING. I raved about it and John kindly laughed and told one of his famous dad jokes. Evidently, it was common in the Martins home because John made sure to have it handy the next time I stayed and I happily helped him cut up the drumsticks again. He found my delight funny because it was an inexpensive meat. I don’t know why this story comes to mind - but I still love smoked turkey drumsticks and think of the time he introduced them to me.
John was always kind and welcoming when I spent the night. He had an evenness and humor about life that put me at ease. He was faithful to God and a faithful presence at Memorial Bible Church. Our community - and the World- are better places because he was here.
May the peace of Christ be with family and friends as they know John was a quiet and positive influence on me in my childhood and young adulthood.
