I have known John for about 6 years. Some ladies and I play Mah Johgg on Tuesday and sometimes Thursday afternoons at the Sumatra coffee shop at 42nd and Peoria. The atmosphere there is a lot like "Cheers" without the beer. John usually stopped by for a drink or sandwich every day. We always had a great conversation. He was a big part of what made the place seem so comfortable and friendly. Yvonne Rayner (the owner) is in England with her family visiting relatives for Christmas and does not return till next week. I know she was as shocked as the rest of us to hear of John's death. Several of us came to the funeral but didn't speak. It was so nice to hear how well liked John was. The Mah Jongg ladies thought the world of him. He will be greatly missed. Debbie Pinkerton
Johnâ??s generosity gave him a tenacious hold on the doctrine of restitution as taught in the Bible. He loved that restoration to Eden conditions offered to every man, woman and child the bounty of Godâ??s gifts. This love, like Godâ??s, gave him a lovable quality. That he couldnâ??t bear thoughts that some would be slighted is a shining example of his image of God.As a young man he helped his father run a firewood business that paid for all 3 childrenâ??s college. That determination to meet life on lifeâ??s terms will always be a beacon in a dark place. Coupled with his magnanimity in giving, it leaves a refreshment, even now.His excruciating honesty that many found sometimes discomfiting gave birth to a trust in me, for him. He never broke that trust. I hope to keep it in my mind and heart.Goodbye, friend, brother in Godâ??s family.Roberta White, MS
