Dr. Jonathan Daniel Giddens' Obituary
Dr. Jonathan Giddens passed away unexpectedly on November 12, 2021, at age 35. Born in Edmond, Oklahoma on May 28, 1986. Jonathan grew up in Jenks, Oklahoma. He graduated from Jenks High School in Jenks, OK in 2004.
Jonathan earned his undergraduate degree in Interdisciplinary Perspectives of the Environment from the University of Oklahoma in 2008. By 2015, he earned his Masters in Plant Biology and continued his education into the Doctorate program at OU. He graduated in May, 2021, earning a PhD in Biology with ambitions of becoming a university professor.
Jonathan loved the University of Oklahoma and was a die-hard Sooner fan, attending every home football game for years. While in school, he was a member of the OU RUF/NEKS, the nation’s oldest all-male spirit squad.
Jonathan was a true outdoorsman and loved spending time fishing, hunting, hiking, or aboard his family’s RV and boat. His interest in the outdoors formed at a young age during yearly camping trips to Colorado with his family and weekends spent at the lake with his grandparents, “MomMom” and “PaPa”.
Jonathan enjoyed cooking and spending time with his dogs (Luna and Juniper). He cherished his time with Ashley and their doggy, Stella. He enjoyed yearly Giddens family reunions and loved his yearly birthday and Christmas shopping trips with his “Meemaw”. Jonathan’s family and friends remained a big priority throughout his life. He was outgoing, accepting and easy to talk to. He loved academia and enjoyed studying, researching and field studies. Jonathan touched many lives and will be sorely missed.
He was preceded in death by his great grandparents J. D. and Iris Giddens, Keith and Mildred Stormont and Louis and Ruby Haney; grandparents John and Gloria Philpott and Dr. Jimmy D. Giddens.
He is survived by his parents, Jeffrey Giddens and Suzanne Giddens (Broken Arrow, OK); brother Justin Giddens and wife Lauren Giddens (Tulsa, OK); Ashley Giddens (Moore, OK); grandmother Marilyn Musgrove and husband Robert Musgrove (Tulsa, OK); great-uncle Jared Giddens and wife Aleta Giddens (Edmond, OK); great aunt Joyce Lackey and husband Jerry Lackey (Wellston, OK); great aunt Susie Waggoner (Catoosa, OK); aunts and uncles, Elizabeth Giddens and husband Jeff Govek (Southlake, TX), Kathryn Carmichael and husband Colin Carmichael (Bentonville, AR), Jason Giddens (Tulsa, Ok), Jennifer Giddens-Brown and husband Derrick Brown (Tulsa, OK), Julie Coughlan and husband Nick Coughlan (Kingfisher, OK) and Randall Philpott (Jenks, Ok). He is also survived by numerous cousins, family members and friends.
A celebration of Jonathan’s life will be held Monday, November 22nd 2021 at 3:00 PM at the Floral Haven Funeral Home Chapel (6500 S 129th E Ave Broken Arrow, OK 74012).
