Joy Georgia Black's Obituary
Georgia Joy Black was born February 15, 1929 in Ft. Smith, Arkansas to Jesse Carrol and Fawn (McCrady) Sumpter. Joy passed away on December 8, 2011 at her home in Owasso, Oklahoma surrounded by family at the age of 82. Joy grew up in Arkoma, Oklahoma. When she was in high school her family moved to Merced, California, where she graduated with honors from Merced High School. She was a proud graduate of Sacramento State University. Upon graduation she began her teaching career in Volta, California. She married Bill Black on March 3, 1951, in Merced California where he was stationed at Castle Air Force Base. During his military career they traveled throughout the United States. Their son Mark was born in 1957 and two years later, their daughter Julia was born. As the children grew Joy continued her teaching career. After Bill's retirement from the Air Force in 1966, the family settled in Tulsa and later moved to Owasso where Bill began his second career working at American Airlines from 1967 to 1994 while Joy taught at Verdigris Elementary School from 1967 to 1994 with many dear friends. She later made many more friends while subbing at Owasso and Collinsville. Joy was preceded in death by her parents; her twin sister, Julia; her brother, Jim and her grandson Harrison Black. She is survived by Bill, her loving husband for 60 years; her son, Mark (Jinny)Black; daughter, Julia (Chuck) Horstman; her sister Freda (Dale) Rothenberger lives in Galt, California and her sister Nancy Sumpter resides in Merced, California; her grandsons Jeremy Carey, Jason Carey (with their families) and David Black. She was the proud great-grandmother of Kaili, Jason, Allen, Logan, Alyson, Porter, Georgia, and Gabriel. She has many nieces and nephews as well as great nieces and nephews. She will also be missed by many friends. Funeral services held on December 12, 2011 at 10:00 at Floral Haven Funeral home.
