Joyce A. Appleman's Obituary
Joyce Ann (Vaught) Appleman, beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away on Wednesday, October 18, 2017.Joyce was born April 23, 1936, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, to Hugh and Ethel (Gibbs) Vaught. At an early age, she moved with her family to (Old) Mannford, Oklahoma, where she spent her school-age years and helped her parents in their family grocery store. She graduated as a Mannford Purple Pirate in 1954.Joyce attended Central State College in Edmond where she received a certificate in Secretarial Science in 1956 and eventually moved to Tulsa to work for Public Service Company of Oklahoma as a Secretary in their Purchasing department.It was at PSO that she met her husband, Raymond L. Appleman. They married on July 21, 1957, and raised their four wonderful children; Mark Appleman, Kent Appleman, Jacki Doak, and Patti Swiderski.Throughout her life, Joyce loved sewing, bowling, cake decorating, painting, square dancing and, later in life, traveling with the PSO retirees (Circuit Riders) and cheering for the Oklahoma City Thunder.She was described by her grandchildren as “the most loving, sarcastic, and sweetest grandma” and “the funniest woman I know” and she was famous amongst her grandchildren for her animal-shaped pancakes and chocolate sheet cake. She was famous amongst her high school classmates for her fudge.Joyce is survived by her husband Ray, sons Mark and Kent, daughters Jacki and Patti, daughter-in-law Carrie, sons-in-law Steve and Thad, grandchildren Laura, Chris, Molly, Megan, Tripp, and Karlee, and great-grandchildren Karsyn and, expected this week, Baby Levy. She is preceded in death by her father and mother, brother Dan Vaught, his wife Naomi, and brother Carl Vaught.Graveside service Wednesday, October 25, 2017 at 3:00 p.m., Floral Haven Memorial Gardens.
