I trained at the U of Iowa for six years with Karl where we were like brothers. He was a big teddy bear: some growl but no bite. Can’t believe that it’s already 7 1/2 years! Miss ya bud!

Susan, I am so sorry for your loss ! Dr. Detwiler was so young to be called home. I only knew him for a short 3months in your home. I was a caregiver for your mom. Prayers to you and your family! Mary Anne
Susan, I am so sorry to hear of Dr, Detwiler’s passing . He was so young to be called home . I am so grateful to have had known him . Even if it was a short 3 months at your home . He had a wonderful family! God bless you & your family!! Mary Anne
When I was referred to Dr. Detwiler, I was 27 years old with a ruptured disc injury that had misdiagnosed by my primary doctor for many months, and at the time had 2 small children I couldn't hardley keep up with. I was TERRIFIED and I was devastated — in constant and severe pain, barely able to walk and couldn't stand up stright….I was just miserable. During our consultation of my situation, although he was straight and to the point, he sounded so confident that the surgery he was going to perform would help me that I felt at ease and trusted him completely and with that and a lot of prayer, we scheduled the operation. I woke up from the surgery and started bawling – I was still a little groggy from the drugs, but I knew I was better, it was different – that searing, overwhelming pain was no more! Although I wasn't in a life or death situation – I credit Dr. Detwiler for saving my life, my quality of life….Mikaela Harding
I remember Dr. Detwiler so fondly. I met him the day after my wedding in 1991, after my husband had a brain aneurysm…I remember my mom being so concerned that he was too young to operate on my husband, yet I had no reservations after talking to him. I later found out that he had an aneurysm himself as a teenager, and I imagine that is why he became a neurosurgeon. My husband was so indebted to this man. He loved him, and talked about him often. My mother-in-law even gave us a teddy bear dressed in scrubs, and named him Dr. Detwiler for us. He saved my husband's life, and he is someone our family will never forget. I am so thankful to God that he placed Karl in our lives at the right moment. Much sorrow goes out to his wife, children, and family, as we are so sad to hear about your loss. Blessings from one of his many patient families, Carrie Jesse
On September 11, 1991 Dr. Detwiler saved my life. I had been married two days before, and had an aneurysm. He was a great physician, and I'm saddened to hear of his passing. I pray his family has peace knowing he was such a gift to so many. Someday we will all be together. Until then, peace be with you.
I am so saddened to hear of Dr. Detwilers' passing. He ended my constant pain in 1996 and saved my life in 2001. He was the utmost professional, plus he let me call him Karl. What a tragic loss. Bless the family and all those whose lives he touched.
My husband nd i just found out this morning of Dr. Detwiler's death. dr. detwiler was my husband's neuro ans we really trusted him from the beginning. We will miss him and there will never be another man like him. But, be assured that one day soon we will see him again.
Dr. Detwiler was a wonderfull doctor. He will be greatly missed.
We have heard the news a month ago and were totally devastated by it. I am still in shock and still very sad by the whole incident. He saved my life/ paralysis back in 2006 on 5 consecutive brain surgeries (Posterior Fossa Decompression) and in the final stage, placed a shunt in me. Everything turned out good and I am normal now. Everytime I touch my skull with the bulge of the shunt, it will always remind me of Dr. Detwiler. I still couldn't believe he's gone! Our thoughts & prayers are with you Susie and the family. Last time I saw him was the time he was so excited that one of his daughters was getting married. He was preparing everything and so proud of her!Gilbert Severino
