PHILIPS – Katy M., 35, of Tulsa, went to be with her Heavenly Father on June 25th, 2015.She passed away peacefully early that morning at Saint Francis Hospital surrounded by her loving family.Katy Philips was born in Independence, Missouri on September 7th, 1979 and grew up in Tulsa, Oklahoma. In her early life, she raised mini-rex rabbits with her family; they earned many awards at shows including the Tulsa State Fair. Katy loved performing ballet; she performed in the Tulsa productions of Nutcracker and Riverdance. She also taught classes to younger students, including her brother Ben, and scored excellence in Royal Academy Dance testing standards. Continuing with her creative talents, Katy received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in graphic design from the University of Central Oklahoma.Throughout her career, Katy proclaimed herself a “Creative Enthusiast” in lieu of simply a graphic designer or art director for print and web. She immersed herself in many creative works as a freelance artist and also worked for a variety of media, including Urban Tulsa Weekly; Geeks to the Rescue; KOTV/ The News on 6; Century Fitness / Martial Arts Industry Association; Brothers & Co.; BlueView; AcrobatAnt; Cubic Creative and Ameristar Perimeter Security.Never one to limit herself, Katy worked in a promotional position for Z104.5 THE EDGE! as the first Metermaid. This led to becoming a well known air talent for the alternative rock radio station. People loved her unique on-air personality and soft spoken voice. As an integral member of THE EDGE crew, she gained countless friendships and experiences. She attended numerous concerts with backstage passes around her neck and meet and greets with bands and fans. She loved the music of Garbage and Nine Inch Nails. She even sometimes used a t-shirt launcher to give free shirts to event attendees.Katy was a free spirit. She lived with purpose and loved without abandon. She had a style all her own and put creativity into everything that she did from her work; her hobbies of painting, cooking and even knitting; her unconditional love for her furry friends; but especially her relationships with people. Often referred to as a “Sassafrass” by close friends, she was a fighter. She overcame setbacks with grace and her own moxie. The world is a better place for having known Katy. Her loss will be felt ten-fold to people who she never even met.Katy is preceded by her grandparents Mabel L. Belden, Harrison R. Belden, Celia J. Philips and Dr. Alfred M. Philips. She is survived by her mother Sheila Philips; father Craig Philips and his wife G Rae; her sisters Cindy Dunn and Judy Philips; brother Benjamin Philips; step-brother Eric Welch; step-sister Gina Gritsavage; niece Bailey Dunn and her loyal guinea pigs, Ginger, Primrose, and Poe. Beloved by her family, she will be missed by all and never forgotten.Katy’s Celebration of Life service will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, July 6th at the Floral Haven Funeral Home. 6500 S. 129th East Ave. Broken Arrow, OK 74012.
