Kay Campbell, Jr.'s Obituary
Kay Campbell, Jr., Ensign, USNR (Ret.) was born on Nov. 19, 1920 in Mansfield, LA. He enlisted as aviation cadet in July of 1942 in Shreveport, LA while a student at Centenary College. He received orders to enroll in Government Civilian Pilot Training Program (CPT) at Centenary. Navy training began with preflight with the 13th Bn. at Chapel Hill, NC, then Memphis, TN, followed by graduation and commission as naval aviator at Corpus Christi, TX. Operational training was at Jackonsville, FL, in PBYs. His first fleet assignment in PBMs was with VPB-204 in Port of Spain, Trinidad. There, he sustained disabling hearing loss flying the beam in severe turbulence. After being in three Navy hospitals and appearing before Navy Retirement Board in Washington, DC, he was placed on the retirement list with rank of Ensign. He completed his education at Oklahoma University in 1948, earning a BS in Business. He is survived by wife, Joan; son, Tom; grandaughter, Molly; daughter-in-law, Debbie; and step-son, Lee Ellison.
