Larry, my brother, and I shared years of countless fun-time memories as children. He found much joy and laughter in playing practical jokes on me. Through the years, he often surprised me with unexpected expressions of brotherly love. For the past few years, although we would communicate by telephone, he enjoyed writing me sweet letters to let me know I was always in his thoughts and on his heart. I was saddened, at times, to observe the internal scars that he carried having served our country in war time, like so many of our priceless soldiers.Despite all the great memories I shared with my brother, the most amazing one is the gift he gave me when he risked his life to save my daughter. She was about two years old and darted out in front of an oncoming car that would have run over her if Uncle Larry had not jumped between her and that car. I treasure LarryĂ¢??s act of courage that benefited our family and the world. I was so proud of Larry, I wrote an article about it and The Upper Room, a Methodist publication, published it years later. The consequence of my brotherĂ¢??s act of bravery never leaves me, especially when I think about or look at my beautiful daughter and my wonderful grandchildren. Someday we will know how our acts of bravery, kindness and mercy truly affected our lives, our future and so many others.I am confident Larry is looking over the portals of heaven along with that great cloud of witnesses. He is cheering me, our sister, Janet, and all our children; to throw aside every encumbrance and that sin which so easily besets us. As we look unto Jesus Christ, the author and finisher of our faith.
I have many cherished memories of my cousin, Larry, visiting at our Grandfather and Grandmother's Barnhardt's home in Helena, Arkansas. Grandmother would be so excited that her other grandkids were coming! We cooked and cleaned all day waiting for their arrival. Larry was always funny and entertaining all of us and his spirit would shine! I remember his laughter to this day. In 2008, my Mother, passed away and as I walked up, my brother was standing next to a very tall man. My brother asked me, "Do you know who this is"? I looked and looked again and yelled, "My cousin, Larry"! I was so happy to see him again. So sorry for the loss you feel, Janet and Betty. You are in my prayers and always be in my heart. May God give you peace and comfort through this difficult time.
