Celebrating the Beautiful Life of LaWanda June Steffes
July 15th, 1940 – December 29th, 2024
Standing tall at six feet with her radiant red hair, LaWanda was a presence you couldn't miss. Born on July 15th, 1940, in Wynnewood, Oklahoma, LaWanda's vibrant spirit and determination touched the lives of everyone around her.
Graduating from Wynnewood High School in 1957, she went on to attend Draughon Business School, embodying her resilient and determined nature. Her knack for connecting with people led her to a career as a saleswoman in jewelry, where she truly could "sell anything to anybody."
LaWanda had a deep love for nature, spending her days growing beautiful flowers and taking long walks, savoring the simple joys of life. An avid supporter of OU Football games, her enthusiasm was infectious, bringing joy to family and friends alike.
A highlight of her life was meeting her beloved husband, Bill Steffes, at a bowling alley—a whirlwind romance that led them to marry just six weeks later. Their love story was a testament to her fearless approach to life and love.
She is survived by her devoted husband Bill, and cherished daughter Stacey Steffes who became her devoted caregivers in her later years. She is also survived by sister Delories and her husband Roger Hensley, and brothers Paul with his wife Lola Thompson, and Edward with his wife Marquitta Thompson. LaWanda was preceded in death by her parents, Robert "Fat" Thompson and Elsie Ozella Thompson, whose memories she kept close to her heart.
LaWanda's life was a beautiful tapestry of love, laughter, and unforgettable moments. Her resilience and determination continue to inspire all who knew her. She will be deeply missed but forever remembered for her radiant smile and the joy she brought into our lives.
A closed casket visitation will be held to honor LaWanda on Tuesday, January 7th, 2025, starting at 11:30 AM, with burial to follow at 1:30 PM.
