Lee Roy Holmes Jr.'s Obituary
Lee Roy Holmes, Junior “Lee”, 96, of Tulsa, OK went to be with our Lord on January 18th, 2024. Lee was
born on March 21st, 1927, in Broken Arrow, OK to Lee Roy Holmes, Senior” Roy” and Opal Deo Bean Holmes. He attended Coweta public schools, prior to graduation and turning 18 he joined the United States Navy. World War II was being fought and he felt the patriotic “Call to Duty”. He was one of 16 million service members who served during WWII. Lee was one of only 119,000 surviving today. (The Greatest Generation). He served aboard the USS Webster ARV2 and the USS Tennessee BB43. Lee was awarded the WWII Victory Medal, the American Campaign Medal, and the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal. Lee was honorably discharged on the 20th day of August in 1946. Later, Lee would receive an honorary high school diploma from Coweta High School, presented to him by the Superintendent, his nephew, Jeffrey Holmes. Upon his discharge, he was employed as a migrant farm worker picking cotton. He then became a drywall tradesman. In 1954 he was hired by Sun Ray DX (Sun Oil Company). Lee had a long career at Sun Oil and retired as a Refinery Station Engineer in 1988. He volunteered his spare time with the Tulsa Auxiliary Police and the Tulsa County Sheriff’s Office. Lee met his wife, Gloria Lee Haynes at a church pie social. On March 7th, 1947 they were married. They had three sons. Lee and Gloria were married for 61 years. Lee and his family were lifelong West Tulsa residents. His three sons graduated from Daniel Webster High School as well as a granddaughter. Three great children attended Daniel Webster High School as well.
Lee was preceded in death by his wife; Gloria, parents; Roy and Opal Holmes; all his siblings; Jack, Martha, Pauline, Paul, Jerry, Franklin, and Alan, all three of his children; Lendell Ray, Boyce Lee, and Kevin Dale.
Lee is survived by his beloved daughter-in-law Kathy Holmes of Jenks, and his grandchildren, Michelle Rossler of Los Lunas, NM, Christina “Chris or Chrissy” Oldham of Tulsa, Dee Ann Harper of Edmond, Angela “Angie” Platner of Broken Arrow, Brian Holmes of Broken Arrow, Levi Moraire-Holmes of Jenks, Sabrina Jones of Tulsa and Brandy Stevenson of Kellyville, 17 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. Lee will be interred at Floral Haven Cemetery in the Garden of Devotion next to his wife, Gloria
Celebration of Life Service will be at 2:00 pm, Friday, January 26, 2024, at Floral Haven Rose Chapel
