Lillian "Lon" DeMonte's Obituary
Lillian “Lon” DeMonte, 84, died April 22, 2009, in Forest Hills Nursing Home after a short stay following a stroke. Lillian was born July 17th, 1924 in Cherokee County near Hulbert, Oklahoma. Lillian attended Stoney Point School until she and her sisters Juanita and Clyde were sent to the Indian school Chilocco for their High School years. After graduation she moved to Muskogee, Oklahoma and began her first job at Kress’s. In February of 1943 she met and married Army Staff Sgt. Peter DeMonte, who was stationed at Camp Gruber. They had three children: Sharron, Pete, Jr., and Karen. They moved to Tulsa in 1945 where Lillian continued her working career, first as a sales clerk at Brown-Dunkin, then as a Customer’s Service Clerk for Sears, Roebuck in 1954. She worked for Sears for 33 years before retiring at a time when employees felt like family and their families knew each other. She made many friends and lasting relationships there. After retiring she worked part-time for Foley’s and Mervyn’s. Lillian was preceded in death by her father Roy Wassom and her mother Mona Mae Wassom. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Peter DeMonte in 2002. She is survived by her sisters: Juanita Smith, Clyde Harabedian, Norma Vivion, Barbara Williams, Joann Wyrrick and brother Robert Wassom; also a sister-in-law Lucy Hale of Forked River, New Jersey. Also surviving are her 3 children: Sharron Anderson and husband David, Pete DeMonte, Jr. and wife Karen, and Karen Isley and husband Mike, plus her grandchildren: Karen Donaldson, Russ Anderson, Tina Hardin, Kristin Voris, Cathy Phillips, Michael Isley, Jr., and Anthony DeMonte, III. There are also ten great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She will be greatly missed by her many nieces and nephews all over the country too numerous to name that she loved dearly, and her many friends for years to come. Service will be at the Floral Haven Funeral Home Chapel at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, April 25, 2009, with a reception following at the Floral Haven Family Center. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Susan G. Komen for the Cure or St. Francis Hospice.
