Lois Ruth Harris' Obituary
Lois Ruth Harris was born May 12, 1912 in Chicago, Ill. She was the daughter of James Edwin Shakespeare and Cora Mae Horman. She graduated from Central High School in Normal, Ill. Lois recieved her college degree in secondary education from Illinois State Normal University. Lois was married to James Harris June 6, 1937 in Anderson, Indiana. She was a high school Home Economics teacher for 16 years, teaching in Hopedale and Deland, Illinois, in Pagosa Springs, Colorado and Pierceton, Indiana. While living in Normal, Illinois, Lois and her husband Jim were superintendents of Victory Hall, a boy’s home, took care of 6 foster children, and ran a catering service. Moving to Wichita, Kansas in 1953 she became a test baker for the Kansas Milling Company then became a business owner of Maico Hearing Aids. In 1961 Lois and Jim moved to Ames, Iowa to become house parents of the Beloit Lutheran Childrens Home. In 1971 she retired from teaching in Indiana and moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma and opened a day care in her home, which she operated for 22 years. Lois volunteered as a mentor at Briar Glen Elementary School and for the Camp Fire Girls Organization. Her last retirement came at the age of 80. She was a member of Southpark Community Church and was also a Sunday School teacher. Services were 11:00 AM, Saturday, November 8, 2008 at Southpark Community Church. Tulsa, Ok. 74146Survived By: Peggy and husband Ron Marsh, son-in-law; Lee and wife Shari Nightingale, 7 grandchildren and their spouses; Scott (Susan) Nightingale, Bruce (Donna) Marsh, Lee Ann (Scott) Stockton, Julie ann Marsh, Randy (Kyla) Marsh, Micah (Karin) Beree and Zach Wyant and 10 great grandchildren. She also leaves behind many other relatives, friends and a large church family. Lois was preceded in death by her husband; Jim in 1983, 1 daughter; Barbara Nightingale, 2 sisters; Edith Merkle and Esther Rensberger
