Lorena McVay's Obituary
McVay, Lorena AdamLorena went to join her Heavenly Father on May 25, 2019. She was born in Abilene, Kansas on February 21, 1924, the daughter of Wilbur and Sylvia Adam. She had three sisters; Eileen, Loretta & Geneva and three brothers; Lee, Albert & Fred. She married Robert E. McVay on August 8, 1948. He passed away in 1994. Two sons, Edmund and Mark were born to Robert & Lorena. Edmund & wife, Dawn, have 2 daughters; Kim and husband, Chase Hagen with children, Avery and Carter, and Sara and husband, Tyler Worten with children, Anna and Tucker. Mark & wife, Florence Ann have 2 daughters; Stephanie, & Lauren and husband, Charles Brandon Sweeney with son, Caleb.Lorena taught Mathematics at Byrd (and Whitney) Junior High School. The success of her teaching can be measured many times over as students whom she taught became engineers, doctors, lawyers and accountants. As an Algebra teacher she added to the joy of learning, subtracted from the fear of Mathematics, divided her knowledge among others, and multiplied the appreciation of education. She always told the students that education is the one thing that cannot be taken from you.Former students will remember her enthusiasm for teaching, the special techniques used to help them remember how to work new problems and the importance of completing each assignment.Lorena was a graduate of Emporia State University in Kansas. There she was a member of Kappa Delta Pi, the national honor society in education. And she was an active member of Kappa Mu Epsilon, the national mathematics honor society which recognized outstanding achievement in mathematics. She was also a member of Sigma Sigma Sigma social sorority.In Tulsa, OK she is a past president of the Tulsa Alumnae Panhellenic.Since retiring from teaching, Lorena has been active at the Asbury United Methodist Church. She has been active in the Tweenagers and the United Methodist Women Group. She has been Treasurer of her UMW Circle for many years. She also has been a tutor in the Youth At Heart group for many years. She participated in the Asbury Singing Ambassador choir which is a lovely senior group. Lorena was a member of the Acts 29 Prayer Ministry.Before her husband, Robert, passed away they traveled to all 50 states. They took a Triple A trip to Hawaii, but traveled to the other 49 states, camping in their Hi-Lo trailer.For the past 11 years she resided in Lubbock, TX. We will remember her positive attitude and captivating smile.Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. at Floral Haven’s Rose Chapel with viewing just prior to services. A reception will follow at Floral Haven’s Family Center from 3:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Asbury United Methodist Church, 6767 S Mingo Rd, Tulsa, OK 74133.
