Lucy Ann Summerfield Vance, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and cherished friend, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 28, 2025. Born on August 17, 1936, in Claremore, Oklahoma, and raised by the Summerfield Family, Lucy Ann was a proud member of the Cherokee Nation. She was known by her Cherokee name, Walela, meaning “hummingbird,” a name she held dear throughout her life.
Lucy Ann's journey was shaped by her early experiences in life, including being adopted and raised by her grandmother and later reconnecting with her birth family. She found strength in her heritage and loved the bond she shared with her biological family, especially her brothers and their families.
In 1954, Lucy Ann married John Vance, and together they built a life filled with love, laughter, and resilience. Their four children—Janet, Carol Ann, Johnny, and Angela—were a testament to their commitment to one another. Lucy Ann was known for her fierce love and advocacy for her children, always ready to step in when needed. She later became a proud grandmother and great-grandmother, finding joy in caring for her grandchildren, including her great-grandchildren.
Lucy Ann’s life wasn’t without its challenges, particularly her time spent in Indian Boarding Schools, but she always balanced hardship with humor. She was a survivor—strong, dignified, and unyielding—and her wisdom continues to guide her family. Known for her sassy, outspoken nature, she was never shy about offering advice. She taught her family countless lessons, whether it was about making good choices or ensuring they stayed true to themselves.
An avid lover of quality, Lucy Ann had a special fondness for leather goods, yard sales, and finding great deals. She could always be found hunting for a bargain, whether it was at Kohl’s or a local yard sale. She also enjoyed simple pleasures like chocolates, family gatherings, and celebrating birthdays with her loved ones.
Lucy Ann’s legacy is one of resilience, love, and a never-ending sense of humor. She will be remembered fondly for her quick wit, her ability to bring laughter into any room, and her love for her family. She leaves behind a legacy of strength and laughter, reminding us that life, like a box of chocolates, is unpredictable—but with a little help from family and friends, we can always improve our chances of getting what we want.
Lucy Ann is preceded in death by her husband John Vance, her daughter Carol Ann Roberts, and her son, Johnny Lee Vance. She is survived by her children, Janet (Emery) Shije, and Angela (Wade) Ohlig. Her grandchildren, Cheryl Shije Shane, Heather (James) Shije Page, Summer (Steve) Donohue, John Roy Roberts, Nick Ohlig, and Andrew (Cathee) Ohlig, Her great-grandchildren Adina Shane, Harrison Shane, Rory Roberts, and Austin Ohlig, and many nieces, nephews, and loved ones who will continue to honor her memory.
