Sue's story began in Waco, Texas, where she spent her formative years and graduated from Waco High School. Her commitment to serving others led her to full time service in The Salvation Army in 1971 when she received her commission as an officer of the Undaunted Session It was during her time as a Salvation Army officer that Sue's path crossed with her future husband, Tom Overton, who would become her lifelong partner in both service and love. On April 13, 1973, in Waco, Texas, Sue and her husband, Tom, embarked on a journey of shared purpose and companionship that would define their lives.
Sue's devotion to the Salvation Army was evident in her role as an accomplished Alto Horn player in the Salvation Army Band. Her music resonated not only in the brass notes she played but also in the joy and inspiration she brought to countless hearts. Throughout her life, Sue's sense of duty led her to various locations across the southeastern United States, where she selflessly dedicated herself to those in need. Her unwavering commitment to her work and her loving spirit left an indelible impact on the communities she served.

Sue's family was the nucleus of her universe, and her children, Chris Overton and Jessica Blackburn, were her pride and joy. Sue's love extended to her son-in-law, Jeremy Blackburn, and daughter-in-law, Allison Overton, who became cherished members of her family. Sue reveled in the role of grandmother, adoringly watching over her grandchildren, Jacob, Taylor, and Evan Swyers, as they grew and flourished.
