Mark Allen Stein's Obituary
Mark Stein, 1957-2024
Mark Allen Stein—beloved husband, father, and grandfather—of Bixby, Oklahoma died after a short ICU stay on March 30, 2024.
Mark was born November 19, 1957 in Tulsa, Oklahoma to Joe and Barbara Stein. The second of three children, Mark enjoyed a fun and adventurous childhood complete with baseball, camping, picking on his younger sister, Nancy, and accidentally catching a field on fire with his older brother, Joe. Mark spent his early high school years working as a mechanic at his dad’s auto repair shop.
When Mark was fifteen, he was captivated by Jill’s long hair at a high school basketball game and was soon introduced to the love of his life by a mutual friend. Mark and Jill dated all throughout high school and were later married the summer of 1978. Marriage brought two wonderful children who Mark lovingly referred to as “goobers.” Goober 1, Jason, was born in 1986, and Goober 2, Megan, was born in 1992. Both kids joyfully contributed to Mark’s graying hair and receding hairline. The highlight of each year was spending the summer at the family lake house grilling, swimming, fishing, and playing games.
When teenage Mark witnessed the effects of a devastating fire, he answered the call to heroically assist others by pursuing a career as a firefighter. Mark spent over thirty years in the Tulsa Fire department and retired as a captain in 2015. A professional tinkerer and unofficial Lowe’s employee, Mark’s retirement proved to be busier than his career, with home remodeling, gardening, woodworking, renovations, traveling, and volunteering at his church.
But Mark’s greatest passion was his family. A devoted and fun Papa, Mark welcomed three beautiful grandchildren: David, Emma Ruth (3), Lewis (1), and has one more on the way. Together they enjoyed long walks through the neighborhood, digging in the dirt, playing in the sprinkler, building forts, reading books, and general shenanigans.
Mark came to Christ at a young age and spent his life serving others with the sacrificial love of God. In everything he did, Mark embodied integrity, faithfulness, dedication, excellence, humility, playfulness, and he had a great sense of humor.
Mark is survived by his wife of 45 years, Jill; his son, Jason and his wife, Tiffany; his daughter, Megan, and her husband, Wade; two grandchildren; brother, Joe; and sister, Nancy.
The memorial service will be held at Evergreen Baptist Church (10301 East 111th St S., Bixby, OK) on Friday, April 5, 2024 at 1 pm. Flowers may be sent to the church.
