Martey Osabu Quaye's Obituary
It is with heavy hearts and deep gratitude that we remember the life of Mr. Macdonald Nii Martey Osabu Quaye, a man whose journey was marked by resilience, dedication, and an unwavering love for family and community.
Born on January 11, 1943, in Accra, Ghana to the late Paul Osabu Quaye and Madame Beatrice Ameley Tackie, he was destined to make a significant mark in the world. He grew up in Atupai and his upbringing was one of strength, shaped by the love and legacy of his parents, including his mother, the granddaughter of the esteemed Ga King, King Tackie Tawiah the first.
From a young age, he displayed an extraordinary sense of respect, discipline, and intelligence that set him apart from his peers. His academic journey was one of triumph, from his early education at Jamestown Government Primary School to his secondary studies at Presbyterian Boys’ Secondary School in Odumase Krobo, and later, sixth form at Ghana National College in Cape Coast. He was not only a student of great potential but a leader who served as Secretary of the Accra Students’ Union, earning the respect of all who knew him. Martey then went on to Legon University to begin his journey in higher education. In August of 1966, he gained a scholarship to continue his education in Canada to study at the University of Manitoba, in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
It was in this same pivotal year of 1966 that Martey met his beloved Magdalene Brown, at Wesley Grammar Secondary School where he taught General Science for a short period of time before leaving to Canada. Meeting Magdalene ignited a love in Martey that he would later realize would leave an indelible mark on his life. Martey earned a Bachelor of Science degree with honors in Zoology and completed a MSC in Zoology in 1972. Martey then attended Kent State University in Ohio, where he pursued his PhD. However, Martey’s passions ultimately lead him in another direction.
After his time in Canada, Martey returned to Ghana and the love that was sparked between him and Magdalene in 1966 was rekindled. Martey and Magdalene married and the bond between them grew into a lifelong partnership for over 50 years. They were blessed with a beautiful daughter, Stacie and 2 wonderful grandchildren Sloane and Trinity, whom he loved dearly. Martey was more than just a scholar, leader, and professional—he was a loving son, brother, and friend. He faced life’s challenges with unwavering strength, especially the painful loss of his mother at the tender age of thirteen. Yet, it was this very adversity that helped shape him into the compassionate and resilient man we came to know.
In addition to his academic and personal achievements, Martey was also a successful businessman. Together with his loving wife he owned and operated the SQ Home Care and SQ Residential Services, Inc and A-Vow Hospice, Inc. His leadership and vision were integral to the operations of the companies, and his dedication to excellence was evident in all he did.
Martey truly enjoyed traveling with his beloved wife, Magdalene. Together, they enjoyed seeing the world - whether on a cruise or traveling directly to places like Greece, Tanzania, Germany, Hawaii, Canada, London, Cuba and so many other places. But there’s nowhere else in the world that Martey enjoyed visiting more than his home in Ghana.
As we bid farewell to this remarkable man, we do so with hearts full of gratitude for the lessons he imparted, the love he gave, and the legacy he leaves behind. His memory will live on in all the lives he touched, both personally and professionally.
Rest in peace, Martey Osabu Quaye. Your journey on earth may have ended, but your spirit remains eternal in the hearts of those who loved you.
From your Magdalena:
You would always say “I love you,” and I would always respond, “I love you more.” The thought of you will never leave my mind nor my heart. You are in my heart and will remain there forever. I love you, Mac. Rest well my love… till we meet again. Yours truly, Magdalene.
