Mary Lou Alexander's Obituary
Mary Louise Alexander (nee: Burke) was born on November 29, 1933 in Augusta, ME. After graduating in 1951 from Cony High School in Augusta, she attended Lasell Jr. College in Auburndale, Mass. In 1953, Lou accepted a position with American Airlines in New York City, but fate intervened and she was soon transferred to Ft. Worth, TX. On Christmas Day 1954, she met William F. Alexander, DVM, and “the rest is history”. Bill and Lou were married on July 2, 1955 and moved to Ponca City, OK, where Bill opened and Lou assisted in running his Veterinary and farming practice. In 1979, Bill took a position with the Oklahoma Dept. of Agriculture and they moved to Edmond, OK. In 1989, Bill and Lou retired to Broken Arrow, OK. Lou had numerous loves, careers, hobbies, and interests. First and foremost, she deeply loved her family. She was a Real Estate Broker and an Executive Coordinator for numerous golf tournaments, including the Cherokee Strip Golf Classic in Ponca City and the Men’s Senior ‘Silver Pages’ Tour in OKC. She loved spending time at their lake house on Grand Lake, hunting elk in the fall in Buffalo, Wyoming, and raising Weimaraner dogs. A Devout Catholic, Lou was truly a people-person who loved social gatherings and the opportunity to make new friends. However, she seemed most elated and was especially gifted in helping those with developmental disabilities. Lou passed away peacefully on September 2, 2014 at her home in Broken Arrow, OK. She is survived by her husband of 59 years, William F. Alexander. She is also survived by son, Kenneth Alexander of Stillwater, OK; son, Thomas Alexander and wife, Jacquelyn of Tulsa, OK; 2 grandchildren, Kendra Brooks of Dallas, TX and Andrea Fox of Columbia, MO. and 5 great-grandchildren. Lou was preceded in death by father, Walter Burke; mother, Margaret Burke; step-mother, Kay Burke and brother, Dick Burke. A Memorial Service for Lou will be held at 3:00 PM Friday, September 5, 2014 at Floral Haven Funeral Home Chapel. In lieu of sending flowers, the family respectfully requests a donation to Lou’s favorite charity for those with disabilities: The Kay County Council for The Opportunity Center (2225 N. Union, Ponca City, OK 74601).
