Blessed be the true Judge.
I first met Mary and Tom Brett, of blessed memory, when I was in 11th grade and I became friends with Ford. Ford’s friends were always comfortable in the Brett home. Little did I know how much they would do for me.
My mother, may she go in peace, suffered from a serious bone disease, and during our senior year in high school, my mother’s femur broke. After a lengthy surgery, my mother spent more than two months in the hospital. She was so sick that I could spend only a few minutes with her every day after school. My father and I would often go to dinner after I visited Mom, but he devoted most of his time attending to her and helping her recover (with a little time left over for work). I was mostly on my own.
My friends’ parents, primarily the Bretts and another couple (though others also helped) stepped into the breach for several months and gave me the love and guidance I so desperately needed.
I do not know what I would have done without the Brett family. I cannot overstate my gratitude to Mary and Tom. And even after my mother began to recover, I was still welcome in the Brett home. Few people are capable of the kindness they extended to me.
May the Almighty comfort the Brett family among all mourners.
