Mary Lea Ellis' Obituary
On April 19th, 2025, in the warmth of her home in Broken Arrow, OK, our cherished Mary Lea Ellis peacefully passed away, holding the hand of her loving husband of 48 years, Larry Lee Ellis Jr.
Born on August 21st, 1957, in Chanute, KS, Mary was the embodiment of resilience, kindness, and generosity. She grew up in a large Catholic family, surrounded by love and laughter. In August 1976, a few short months after graduating high school from Memorial High School in Joplin, MO, she began her lifelong journey with the love of her life, Larry, weaving together memories that became the cornerstone of her family.
Mary's heart was her family, and she was a fiercely devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. Sundays at Mary's home were filled with the aroma of her delicious cooking as she hosted treasured family cookouts. Her massive feasts during Christmas, Easter, and Thanksgiving became cherished traditions, bringing together siblings, children, and grandchildren alike.
Mary had a passion for life's simple pleasures. An avid reader and enthusiastic cook, she delighted in making sure the bellies of those she most loved were full. Her collection of Polish pottery and antique furniture was a testament to her appreciation for beauty and history. She found joy in the serenity of the lake, whether swimming, fishing from the dock, or simply basking in the sun. Many hours were spent piecing together puzzles, a hobby that mirrored her talent for bringing people together.
Her travels took her to wonderful places, but it was the moments spent playing games and laughing with family that she treasured most. Mary's humility and loyalty touched everyone who knew her. She taught us that generosity is not just about giving but about opening one's heart entirely.
She is survived by her devoted husband, Larry Lee Ellis Jr.; her sons, Larry Lee Ellis III, Justin Ellis (Brooke Ellis), and Aaron Ellis (Whitney Ellis and children); her grandchildren, Camdyn Ellis, Ariel Ellis, Samantha Ellis and Evie Ellis; and her great-granddaughter Ellie Cloud. She also leaves behind her six siblings, Pat King (Lee King), Francine Dirnberger (Vern Dirnberger), Collette Johnson (Charlie Johnson), Stephanie Garrett, Michelle Riesenmy, and Bud Cavanaugh (Terri Cavanaugh); and all her beloved nieces and nephews.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Eunice Cavanaugh and Ralph "Pete" Cavanaugh; her grandson, Arthur James “AJ” Ellis; and her grandparents, Arthur Hofer and Leona Hofer. Brothers-in-law John Garrett and Jeff Riesenmy.
