Mary Ann Wehrs' Obituary
Mary Ann Wehrs, 87, passed away July 27, 2018 at St. Francis Hospital. She was born September 29, 1930 in Waco, Nebraska. The daughter of Warren and Mary Pettee, she attended Doane College in Crete Nebraska, where she met Roger E. Wehrs, then a medical student at the University of Nebraska Medical School in Omaha. They were married on June 18, 1950, and had two children, Donald and Suzanne. Following Roger’s internship in Oakland, military service in Germany, and residency in Kansas City, they settled in Tulsa, where Roger practiced medicine, specializing in ear surgery, from 1957 to 1997. After having worked as a medical secretary and other jobs during Roger’s medical training, and after having cared for two small children, Mary Ann returned to her college studies in 1965, earning a B.S. in Education in 1970, and a M.T.A. in 1973, both from the University of Tulsa. After teaching in the Tulsa public schools, she worked as a consultant/advisor in special education, first for the Tulsa and Okmulgee school systems, and later for the Tulsa-area Catholic school system, where she designed individualized learning plans for students throughout the school systems with special needs and learning disabilities. After retiring from teaching, Mary Ann worked as office manager for Roger’s medical practice until his retirement in 1997. A longtime member of All Souls’ Unitarian Church, she was after retirement heavily involved with the Tulsa Opera Guild and the Tulsa Pan-American Roundtable, which offers support and outreach to the Tulsa-area Hispanic community. She served two terms as president of the Roundtable. Mary Ann is preceded in death by her parents and her two brothers, Richard and Warren. She is survived by her husband of 68 years, Roger; her son Donald and daughter-in-law Lorna Wood, her daughter Suzanne and son-in-law Brian Kreitzberg; her five grandchildren, Sylvia, William, Jennifer, Paul, and Joseph; and a great-grandson, John. A memorial service will be held at All Souls’ Unitarian Church Monday, Aug. 6 at 11:00. Contribution in her memory may be made to the Parkinson’s Foundation.
