Born in Tulsa, OK, Melissa Renee (Down) Battles filled 51 years with curiosity, laughter, and bright purpose. Today we celebrate the beautiful life she shaped through each book she opened, every mile she traveled, and the many joyful rounds of Sunday Game Day she attended.
An avid reader from childhood, Melissa dove deep into Sci-Fi and Fantasy, holding Star Trek and Harry Potter especially close to her heart. Conventions, new destinations, and quiet moments with her beloved cat Piccolo all added color to her days. Her shelves, suitcases, and game table were always ready for the next adventure.
Family stood at the center of everything she did. She shared life with her husband Keith Battles and treasured time with her parents Ella and Jack Down; sister Brenda Barnett and husband Paul and Amy Down-Petree and husband Bill; nieces Raven Barnett and Bella Barnett; and nephews Donovan Gibson and Isaac White. Though her grandparents Sonny and Louise Down passed before her, their stories lived on each time the family gathered.
Supportive, loyal, and determined, Melissa cheered every win, stayed present through every loss, and never let heart disease steal her spark. Friends and relatives recall how her encouragement turned small moments into lasting confidence, especially for the young readers and gamers who looked up to her.
Melissa’s legacy lives on when a page turns, a passport stamp lands, or domino laid on a bright Sunday afternoon. May we keep her spirit close by sharing stories, planning trips, and, above all, playing one more game together in her honor.
