Melva Jean Meyers' Obituary
Melva Jean, 87, of Broken Arrow, passed away Wednesday, March 2, 2016. Melva was born on November 1, 1928 in Durant, OK to Beatrice and Ralph Hall. Melva attended elementary school in Pawhuska, Oklahoma. As a young child Melva enjoyed summers with her aunt in Arkansas, while her mother and father both pursued master’s degrees. Throughout her childhood Melva enjoyed the arts through dance and piano classes. Amidst her elementary school years, Melva and her family moved to Ardmore, OK where she graduated high school. Melva’s father was the principal at each school she attended. As was expected with the daughter of the principal, Melva was a feisty adolescent and enjoyed spending time with her friends occasionally skipping school to duck hunt. Melva attended college at Monticello College in Illinois, however was unable to finish due to a serious car accident. Following her return home from college, Melva married Rex Meyers on April 28, 1950. She and Rex had 4 children: Janet, Stanley, Leslie Lee and Earl. While Rex maintained a career in the oil industry that often resulted being away from home months at a time, Melva raised their four children and managed the home. The Meyers family lived in Texas and California before settling in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1967. While her family remained her first priority, Melva also worked in Patient Accounts at Saint Francis Hospital. Her children say they will remember their mother for her resourcefulness and her strength. Her resourcefulness was revealed in her ability to pick-up a multitude of skills including sewing Barbie clothes for her daughters, upholstering furniture for their home and even re-screening windows. Everyone around her saw her strength as she endured four different battles with cancer as well as other medical issues. Through all of these difficult times, Melva demonstrated poise. Following Rex’s retirement, Melva and he enjoyed traveling together where they were able to experience many places of world together. In these later years of their marriage, Rex and Melva also became active at St. Anne’s Catholic Church beginning in 1997. Melva’s hobbies included gardening and bird watching which she passed down to her daughters who also love gardening. Melva also contributed to the community by volunteering alongside her daughter Jan at Meals on Wheels for 11 years. Melva is survived by: her four children and their spouses, Jan and Allen Pitcock, Stan Meyers, Lee and Danny Bayouth and Earl Meyers; her seven grandchildren and their spouses, Wes and Mindy Pitcock, Chris and Jill Dakin, Leslie and Billy Keenan, Collin and Jana Pitcock, Sol and Libby Bayouth, Amanda Edwards, and Rex Stephen Meyers; her 10 great-grandchildren, Lillian, Owen, Liam, Georgia, Mason, Conner, Sullivan, Eli, Ellery, and Sawyer. Melva was preceded in death by Rex, both parents, her brother Hal Hall, nephew Mark Hall and great-grandson Greyson. In lieu of flowers, friends may consider contributions to Meals on Wheels, Family Hope House and St. Francis Hospice. Celebration of life services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday at Floral Haven Chapel, 6500 S 129th E Ave, Broken Arrow, OK 74012. At Melva’s request there will be no visitation. She wants this to be a celebration of her life.
