Melvyn Lacy's Obituary
Melvyn Leroy Lacy passed away in Tulsa, OK on April 18, 2019 at the age of 87. He left this world surrounded by loving family.Melvyn was born on October 24, 1931 in Henry, Nebraska to the late Matthew and Violet Lacy. He grew up farming and ranching in Nebraska and Wyoming. He graduated Sioux County High School where he played football, basketball, and was a part of the band. He withdrew from Chadron State to enlist in the United States Navy during the Korean War and was stationed in Seattle, WA. He served from 1951-1955. He met his late wife, Shirley R. Lacy, in Seattle and they married May 1, 1954. They were married 63 years. Melvyn completed a BS in Vocational Agriculture and a MS in Plant Pathology from the University of Wyoming, and a PhD in Plant Pathology from Oregon State University. Melvyn and Shirley had two sons, Matthew James in 1957 and Miles Ward in 1960 in Laramie, WY. They lived in Michigan for 33 years while Melvyn was a professor of Plant Pathology at Michigan State University from 1965-1996. He was known for his research of plant diseases, and time in extension service. After his retirement they relocated to Broken Arrow, OK in 1998 to be near their two grandchildren, and son Miles. He was an avid tennis player and member of Indian Springs Country Club, an active member and choir member of the First United Methodist Church of BA, a member of two barbershop chapters, Capitol City Chordsmen (MI), and the Founders Chorus (OK), and a Master Gardner with the OK State extension office.Melvyn is survived by his sister Bonnie Schmick of Torrington, WY; his two sons, Matthew (Judy) of Parker, CO, and Miles (Michelle) of Broken Arrow, OK; and his two grandchildren Kristle Ann and Miles Jr. of Broken Arrow, OK.His memorial service will be held at First United Methodist Church of Broken Arrow on Friday, April 26, 2019 at 11 AM. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to American Diabetes Association.
