Meredith Turner Bynum's Obituary
Meredith Turner Bynum, “Pig”, went to his heavenly home on Sunday, November 26, 2017, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He was born in Tishomingo, Oklahoma on April 28, 1927 to J.C. and Lorena (Gardner) Bynum. Pig attended all 12 years in the Tishomingo Public Schools. At the age of 17, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy with his parents’ permission, and served on a mine sweeper off the coast of Japan. After his honorable discharge, he returned to high school and graduated as president of his senior class and an All-District football player. Pig attended Murray State College and graduated with an Associates Degree in business. On Thanksgiving Day, November 25, 1948, he married Bobbie Lou Raper. They lived and worked in Tishomingo for five years. Pig worked at International Harvester (Cobb Brothers), and then later the Ford Motor Company. After moving to Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1953, he worked for Douglas Aircraft. In 1958, he went to work for Zeligson Co., and retired as a purchasing agent after 34 years of service in 1992. The 1950’s also blessed Pig and Bobbie with two sons, Joe and Rod. Pig and his family joined a bigger family at the Sheridan Road Baptist Church in 1953, where he served in many capacities. Most of his time was served as the treasurer or assistant treasurer for over 50 years, but he also really enjoyed serving the 2nd & 3rd graders for 35 of those years, coaching women and men’s softball teams, and attending Falls Creek camp with their youth group. Pig was generous with his personal time by spending annual vacations to make trips to Falls Creek possible. Pig was always helping Bobbie with her church activities, and lived his life as an example of quiet gentleness, humility and servant hood. Pig believed heartedly in working with his hands and helping others any way he could. Pig loved sports. He loved his OSU Cowboys and the Dallas Cowboys. He also loved helping with his sons’ ball teams when they were growing up. He was especially honored and humbled when he was inducted into the Tishomingo Athletic Hall of Fame in 1997. Pig was also a handyman, as his granddaughter, Kelli, once said, “PaPa can fix anything!” Mostly, Pig loved his family. His life will most be remembered as a devoted husband to Bobbie, dad to Joe and Rod, PaPa, Grandpa and G-Pa to grandchildren, Kelli, Jodi, Michael and Kendell, and greatgrandchildren, Kendall, Keaton, Lucas and Landon. Pig is survived by his wife, Bobbie, sons Joe (Debbie) and Rod Bynum (Madeleine Hunter); grandchildren Kelli (Kris) Henthorn, Jodi (Nick) Trotter, Michael Bynum, and Kendell (Kelsey) Ridings; four greatgrandchildren, Kendall and Keaton Henthorn and Lucas and Landon Trotter; brother James (Kerrie) Bynum; sister Mary Sexton; sister-in-law Ruth Plaster; brothers-in-law Dub (Jackie) Raper and Tom (Karen) Raper; and all the many nieces and nephews who Pig was fond of and took an interest in their lives. Pig’s family wishes to extend their deepest gratitude to our families, our church families, many friends, Legend Assisted Living, Valir Hospice, and Pig’s special caregivers who so compassionately cared for him. Your many prayers were felt, and we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
