Merle Homer Wells' Obituary
In Loving Memory of Mr. Merle "Homer" Wells May 22, 1926 – July 18, 2025
Merle “Homer” Wells of Collinsville, Oklahoma, passed away on July 18, 2025, at the age of 99. Born in Pensacola, Kansas on May 22, 1926, to Merle Arden Wells and Sarah Francis Rau, Homer lived a life marked by grit, laughter, and deep devotion to family and community.
As a young man, Homer overcame typhoid fever at the age of 17—only to be drafted into the United States Army shortly afterward, serving nearly two years during World War II. His resilience, both physical and spiritual, became a defining feature of his life.
An outdoorsman at heart, Homer cherished the simple joys of deer hunting, fishing, and camping—especially alongside his brother Raymond. His love for the natural world was matched only by his gift for storytelling. Whether swapping tales over a cup of coffee or spinning yarns that brought laughter around a campfire, Homer was never short of words or charm.
Many in Tulsa will remember him as the sole plumber at the Tulsa Fair Grounds for decades—a trusted fixture who kept things running with dedication and skill. Earlier in life, he worked at a corn meal factory, and even enjoyed fishing with Oral Roberts in his younger days.
Homer had a deep affection for country music and old westerns, which he continued to enjoy even after his eyesight began to fade. With the familiar sounds of the frontier filling his home, he remained connected to the world he loved—rugged, heartfelt, and enduring.
Merle is survived by his friend Carol Stevens; his children James Wells, and Dana Clifton; and Linda Smith, and husband Ronnie; his grandchildren James Wells, and wife Stephanie; Jennifer Peel, and husband Jessie; and Andrea Thurman, and husband Charles; along with 4 great grandchildren; and his beloved brother Raymond Wells; along with a host of other family and friends that will forever miss and love him.
He will be remembered for the stories he told, the lives he touched, and the legacy of hard work, humor, and perseverance he leaves behind.
