Michael "Myke" Kent Thompson's Obituary
In Loving Memory of Michael Kent Thompson
On January 25th, 2024, Michael “Myke” Kent Thompson, our beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend passed away peacefully in his sleep. Although saddened by his passing we are thankful for the days in which we spent in his company. We will cherish our fondest memories of his boisterous laughter, corny dad jokes and positive outlook on life. A gentle giant through and through, “Big Myke” as he was known by his friends was a warm, loving, kindhearted man and friend to anyone fortunate enough to know him.
Myke was born March 17th, 1950, as the youngest of three brothers in Tulsa Oklahoma to Mother Delora York Thompson and Father Clifford Thompson. A Native Tulsan, Myke graduated from Will Rogers’ high school in 1968. He later attended college at NEO A&M in Miami, Oklahoma, and the University of Tulsa. Upon finishing his education Myke worked in the welding industry and later as a commercial industrial estimator for 40 plus years with coworkers and colleagues who became lifelong friends. He was a member of professional organizations such as Sertoma and the Pipefitters Union. However, his best years were spent traveling, enjoying his hobbies like golfing and woodworking, camping, and providing for his loving family as a devout, dad, pawpaw, uncle, and a husband to his cherished wife Karen Thompson.
Myke and Karen met in their college band at Northeastern Oklahoma College. Meeting first as good friends after dating for only 5 months they became engaged to be married. Myke always said he knew he wanted to marry Karen after their first month of dating. Myke and Karen were truly best friends and enjoyed a loving treasured marriage for 53 years.
After a year of matrimony Myke and Karen welcomed their daughter Angela to the world. They passed onto her their love of camping, fishing, and golfing the trio taking many adventures together as a family. Once their daughter Angela and son in Law Bobby married their family expanded adding two granddaughters, Alyssa and August who were the light of Myke’s life. Known as pawpaw to his girls he was the best grandfather a girl could ask for always calling his granddaughters and daughter his pride and joy. The family took many trips, spent long dinners together and shared countless hilarious moments. He made a point to always have his family close.
Myke was fortunate to retire early and spend his golden years traveling the country golfing, fishing, and camping with his beloved wife Karen. His greatest passion was exploring the beautiful nature and scenery around America with friends, family, his wife and their two labs Shadow and Tuffy. Their many adventures together took them to the most beautiful corners of America with Glacier National Park, Yellowstone, and the mountains of Utah and Colorado among their favorites. Myke’s favorite place in the world however was the ice-cold waters of the White Buffalo River in Arkansas. Myke visited White Buffalo River annually camping and fishing with his family every year since he was five years old. Introduced to the beautiful river by his parents, Myke continued visiting the river his entire life later continuing the tradition with his own family. It has become a place all Myke’s family gather to enjoy each other’s company.
Myke displayed all the love and support a husband, father, and grandfather could ever give. He helped whenever he could, gave advice freely, was generous, kind and always knew the best time to crack a joke. All Myke wanted in life was his family’s happiness, providing priceless memories and cherished life experiences for his loved ones is Myke’s legacy. Their happiness was his happiness. He was nothing short of amazing and truly adored by his family.
Myke is preceded in death by his father, Clifford Thompson, his mother, Delora York-Thompson, his brothers Bennie Wagner and Richard Thompson, his son Kenneth Michael Thompson, of Tulsa Oklahoma, his sister-in-law Barbara Albrecht and his niece Lori Wagner-Mancil of Ocala, Florida.
Left to cherish Myke’s memory are his wife Karen Thompson, his daughter Angela Bacon, his son in law Bobby Bacon, his eldest granddaughter Alyssa Bacon and her fiancé Zachary Kelley, his youngest granddaughter August Bacon and many sisters in law, brothers in laws, nieces, nephews, family, and friends.
Myke endured a lengthy health battle the last years of his life, but always offered a smile, a joke, and a cheerful attitude. His complaints were minimal compared to the hardship he faced. He spent his final days surrounded by friends and family who loved him dearly. Myke peacefully left this world in his sleep to be greeted by his loved ones that passed before him.
