Mieko Horne's Obituary
Celebrating the Life of Mieko Horne Born September 19th, 1935 in Shizuoka City, Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan, where she lived until 1961. She was the second of five children. Her parents were Mr. Masao Akita and his wife, Miyoko Akita. Mieko attended the United Canadian Missions Schools. She met William Horne in 1959 while he was temporarily assigned to duty in Japan with the U.S. Navy. After corresponding for two years, they were married on August 2nd, 1961 in the U.S. Consulate in Fukuoka City, Japan. After marriage, Mieko lived in various stateside and Japan locations during William’s Naval and post-Naval career. When in the U.S., Mieko worked from time to time in electronics assembly. She also served as a Red Cross volunteer in the base hospital at USMCAF Iwakuni, Japan from 1965-1968 and again at the Tokyo Red Cross Hospital from 1985-1990. Upon moving to the Austin, TX area in 1992, she retired and began to pursue demonstration and display of Japanese cultural activities. She was well known in the Austin area as an enthusiastic member of both the Austin Taiko Group and the Austin Minyou Japanese Folk Dance Group. She frequently participated in demonstrations of tea ceremony and Japanese calligraphy. Mieko was a member of Boston Avenue Methodist Church in Tulsa, OK. In the Austin Area, she attended the Pflugerville First United Methodist Church and was an active member of the Japanese Church of Austin since the first meeting in August, 2013. Mieko is survived by her husband, William Horne, of Pflugerville, TX, her sons; Gregory Masami Horne, wife Fumie and sons, William Jin and Van Takeshi, of Broken Arrow, OK; and Douglas Makoto Horne and wife Deane, of San Jose, CA; and two sisters, Yoko Okada and Toyoko Wada of Shizuoka City, Japan.
