Naomi Shaw's Obituary
Naomi Ruth Shaw, 88 of Tulsa, Oklahoma passed from this life on Wednesday, November 13, 2019 in a Tulsa hospital with family by her side. She was born January 4, 1931 in Okemah, Oklahoma to her parents, Billie James Byrd and Susie Harjo Byrd.Ruth grew up around Okemah and Creek Indian churches and had fond memories of a childhood consisting of weekends at the church camps. She told me her dad known to us boys as “Gamp” used to pick her up at the school bus stop and had warm bricks in blankets to her and her brother Jerry on those bitter cold days. She attended Northeastern State University and was elected President of her sorority Delta Sigma Epsilon and we still have a picture of her attending their national convention is Chicago.She worked for the federal government and BIA/BIE at in Tahlequah, Osage Agency, and Chiloccco.Following that period, she worked for the Teamsters/Pipeliners, Army Corps of Engineers, and Southwestern Power Administration payroll department. She retired from federal service and later worked part time at JC Penny’s and Macy’s. She enjoyed arts and crafts and loved southwest style of crafting. She lived in Tulsa most of her life to be near her family.She was full blood Creek but always supported the Osage side of our heritage. She organized family reunions and loved being among her relations near and far. She always remembered birthdays and special occasions.Naomi is survived by three sons, Ron Shaw and his wife Lesa of Pawhuska, Oklahoma, John Shaw and his wife Tracey of Sapulpa, Oklahoma and Mike Shaw and Tracy Winn of Tulsa, Oklahoma; one brother, Jerry Byrd of Yakima, Washington; eleven grandchildren, Jack Shaw, Derek Shaw, Kimberly Shaw, Andrea Shaw, Samuel Shaw, Blaine Shaw, Mike Shaw, Tyler Shaw, Chase Barnhart, Corey Barnhart and Brooke Barnhart; eight great-grandchildren, Caleb, Isabella, Alexa, Tristan, Amber, Greyson, Chevy and Oliver; one grand-dog, Jayden; and a host of friends and extended family. She was preceded in death by her parents, Billie and Susie Byrd.Visitation will be held from 3 – 7 p.m. on Tuesday, November 19, 2019 at Floral Haven Funeral Home. Services will be at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 20, 2019 at Floral Haven Funeral Home Chapel.In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to St. Joseph’s Indian School, P.O. Box 326, Chamberlain, SD 57326.
