Floyd, Nelwyn Merle's Obituary
Nelwyn Merle Welborn Floyd, known to everyone as “Nell” or “Maumau” to her grandkids, was born on November 6, 1941 in Pelican, Louisiana, the only child of William Calhoun Welborn and Mildred Alda Hight. Nell grew up in rural Louisiana and excelled at basketball at her high school. Going off to college after high school, Nell met J.T. Floyd, Jr., and the two were married on May 13, 1960, in San Augustine, Texas. When J.T. enlisted in the Air Force, she became accustomed to being the wife of a pilot. Their occasional military moves took them to California, Utah, North Carolina, Nebraska and eventually, Texas, in 1978.
Nell and J.T. became busy parents of three girls: Denise Meissner (Dwayne Wellmann), Karen Evans (Rory) and Sandra Floyd.
Over the years, Nell always had a small dog in her home she could dote over. When the grandchildren came, she had plenty of time for them too. She always liked to see her grandkids compete in sporting events. Her encouragement was calm and understated, marked by a small but meaningful smile of pride. She loved Christmas and always showered her children, in-laws, grandkids, and great grandkids with delicious family dinners, way too many presents and generous cash gifts. Their final move was not for work but for unincumbered retirement in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, living with their daughter Karen. Nell’s beautiful smile was present even in the difficult times and in her last days.
She is survived by her husband, J.T., their three children, four grandchildren: Sarita Jackson (Keith), Erica Davidson (Jonathan), Alex Meissner (Sarah), and Miranda Meissner, and three great-grandchildren: Jordan, Emma and Sydney.
She was preceded in death by her parents. A private graveside service will be held on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, at 2:30pm at Fort Gibson National Cemetery. Joel Steen will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
