Olida Joanne Nelson's Obituary
Olida Joanne Nelson, affectionately known as Joanne, passed away on June 28, 2023, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, at the age of 94. She was born during the challenging times of the Great Depression on September 27, 1928, in Austin, Texas, to her loving parents Oliver and Ada Carlson.
Joanne's early years were marked by the resilience and strength that characterized her generation. She pursued an education at Bethany Lutheran College, where she honed her skills and developed a deep passion for music. Joanne's talent as a drummer and her soulful singing voice found a home in the church, where she shared her gifts with the congregation. Her involvement in the church was a central part of her life, and she dedicated herself to serving as an administrative assistant to the Bishop and Pastor.
In her pursuit of helping others, Joanne expanded her knowledge by taking courses at Stephens Ministry for counseling. Her caring nature and compassionate heart made her a valuable source of support and guidance to those in need. She also spent time as a substitute teacher, imparting knowledge and fostering growth in young minds. Additionally, Joanne worked at Dillard's as a sales clerk, where her warm smile and friendly demeanor brightened the day for countless customers.
Joanne's commitment to her community extended beyond her professional life. She generously volunteered her time at the Sand Springs Chamber of Commerce, embodying the spirit of service and dedication. Her selfless efforts were recognized and celebrated when she was awarded the prestigious Volunteer of the Year honor. Joanne's unwavering dedication to making a positive impact on the lives of others was truly inspiring.
Family and friends held a special place in Joanne's heart. She cherished her loved ones and treasured the moments spent together. Her warm and inviting nature created a welcoming environment for all who crossed her path. Whether through family gatherings, outings with friends, or quiet moments of connection, Joanne shared her love and created lasting memories.
Olida Joanne Nelson, known as Joanne, leaves behind a legacy of faith, kindness, and service. Her unwavering commitment to her church, her community, and her loved ones will continue to inspire all who knew her. She will be dearly missed but fondly remembered by her family, friends, and all those whose lives she touched. May her soul find eternal peace.
She was preceded in passing by her parents, Oliver John Carlson and Ada Victoria Carlson; her beloved husband, Dale Nelson; her son, Leyton Oliver Nelson; and her brother, Maurice Carlson. She is survived by her daughter, Sue Loerwald; daughter, Lynda White; son, Lantie Nelson; daughter, Kay Cowan and her husband, Greg; her grandchildren, Clint Loerwald and his wife, Christine, Craig Loerwald and his wife, Becky, Casey Loerwald and his wife, Michelle, Kris White, Breanna Russell, Laura Bush and her husband, Andy, Ashley Freeman and her husband, Madison, Kellen Cowan and his wife, Tara, Randi Cowan; her great-grandchildren, Dylan, Zachary, Addison, Claire, Rece, Cy, Leyton, Maddox, Kyrstin, Bryson, Brooks, Blakely, Nel, Mack, Kade, Kenna, and numerous other family members and friends.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the charity of your choice.
A short graveside service will be 11:00 am, Wednesday, July 5, 2023, at Floral Haven Memorial Gardens Veterans Field of Honor.
Celebration of Life Gathering will follow the graveside at Floral Haven Family Center from 12:00 -2:00 pm.
