Peggy Maxine Selman's Obituary
In Loving Memory of Peggy Maxine Selman
Peggy Maxine Selman, born on August 14, 1941 in Haskell, Texas, to the loving parents O.T. and O’Leta Williams, peacefully passed away on February 19, 2024, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Peggy was one of seven siblings and spent her early years surrounded by family and love. She graduated from Haskell High School in 1959 before embarking on a journey of adventure with her beloved husband, Hugh Selman.
Peggy and Hugh's union began on their wedding day, August 7, 1959, in Haskell, Texas. They immediately set off for Austin, Texas, where Peggy accompanied her husband as he pursued his education at the University of Texas. Their family grew with the arrival of their son, James Reagan, on January 12, 1962. After Hugh's graduation, they moved to Richardson, Texas. Eventually, they relocated to Tulsa, Oklahoma, where their daughter, Patsy was born on August 22, 1969. Ultimately, they decided to make Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, their final home.
Peggy's professional journey was marked by passion and dedication. She worked part-time for an interior design company and Robinson Glass in Broken Arrow before finding her calling at the Broken Arrow Public Library. Her commitment to serving her community extended beyond her career, as she was actively involved in various organizations. She was a member of the First Methodist Church of Broken Arrow and the Crusaders Sunday School class. She was a member of the Green Country Quilt Guild and served a term as President. She and Hugh volunteered together at the Broken Arrow Community Playhouse and the Tallgrass Prairie. She was also a volunteer with the League of Women Voters of Tulsa County and The Friends of the Library. When she and Patsy were caregiving for Hugh, they made thousands of opioid overdose prevention kits for a local non-profit to distribute to the community. Peggy and Hugh were active supporters of the Broken Arrow Football program and the Pride of Broken Arrow marching band long after Jim and Patsy graduated and moved away. They shared of their treasure with Clarehouse, Broken Arrow Neighbors and Cal Farley’s Boys Ranch.
In addition to her professional and community endeavors, Peggy found joy in her personal interests. She was a member of "The Bridgettes," a group of lifelong friends with whom she shared cherished moments of camaraderie and bridge games. Peggy's green thumb flourished as she tended to beautiful gardens and houseplants, filling her home with vibrant life. Camping and travel were also dear to Peggy's heart, allowing her and Hugh to explore historical landmarks and national parks in their RV. They had a dream trip of an Alaskan cruise with their good friends Earl and Susan Lewis. The whole family enjoyed many a summer at Fort Gibson Lake. A woman of many talents, Peggy was an avid reader, jigsaw puzzler, Jeopardy master, skilled artist, and master quilter whose creations earned her multiple awards at quilt shows and the fair. However, her greatest joys were found in the love and companionship of her family, especially her grandchildren, Molly, and Annie.
Peggy is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Hugh Lee Selman, parents O.T. and O’Leta Williams, brothers Rex and Jim Bob Williams, sisters Shirley Curd and Sammie Howeth, mother-in-law Martha Frances Davis Selman, father-in-law John Reagan Selman, sister and brother in law John Martha and Patrick Kelley and brother in law William Selman, and her best friend Ardith Helmer.
