Phoebe Jeanette Mancino's Obituary
Phoebe Jeannette Thompson Mancino went to be with her Lord on the evening of October 14th, 2017, surrounded by her family at St. Francis Heart Hospital in Tulsa, after a long battle with complications from heart surgery.Phoebe was born at home in Tulsa, on 7 May 1946, to her mother, Cora Agnes “Tiny” Rhodes McDonald. She grew up with two loving sisters, Willie May Thompson Jones and Deidre Svatba Ellis, in the home of their mother and father, Harry McDonald, Jr. in Tulsa, OK.Phoebe graduated from Edison High school, class of 1964, where she was a member of the ‘Pirates’ social club. She attended Northeastern State University, where she graduated with a degree in Physical Education.Phoebe converted to Catholicism, and married the love of her life, Thomas Peter Mancino, of Tulsa, on 29 April 1967, in a ceremony at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church. She was especially close to her in-laws, Lee and Rudy Mancino, and the many members of Tom’s extended family, especially her sister in laws.Phoebe had a career as a physical education instructor, teaching for 28 years in Union public schools. Phoebe was also a driver’s education instructor, and is responsible for teaching generations of Oklahoman’s to drive. While on sabbatical, Phoebe served as Governor Frank Keating’s secretary during the Murrow building bombing tragedy.During her husband, and son’s combat deployment to Afghanistan with the 45th Infantry Brigade, Oklahoma Army National Guard, in 2003-2004, Phoebe served as the head of the units Family support group. In retirement, Phoebe volunteered at St. John’s hospital in Broken Arrow for many years.Phoebe enjoyed gardening, games of all sorts, and any activities her grandchildren were involved in. She was an avid traveler, enjoying travelling to visit her many nieces and nephews, as well as taking trips with Tom.Phoebe was preceded in death by her Mother, Tiny and sister Deidre. She is survived by her, loving husband Tom, father Harry, sister Willie, daughter Lisa (Tim) Sullivan, as well as sons Tommy (Katherine), and Chris.Phoebe had no greater love than for her six grandchildren: Charlotte Mancino, Jack Mancino, Laura Katherine Mancino, Garrett Sullivan, Bailey Sullivan, and Lauren Sullivan, as well as many others whom she considered to be her extended family including Richard and Leah Smith of Broken Arrow, and their children: Reed, Gillian, and Silvia, as well as a great horde of nieces and nephews all of whom she loved greatly.Please join us at Floral Haven in celebrating Phoebe’s life at a memorial ceremony to be held Thursday, October 19th at 3 PM, with a reception to follow immediately in the family center.
