I have very vivid memories of Uncle Ray and Aunt Mary Belle as a young child, about kindergarten or first grade year in school. Uncle Ray and Aunt Mary Belle were always my favorite aunt and uncle. As a young child, they made me feel special; I always knew that they loved me. I still have some of the Christmas gifts that they gave me during my early years.
As a young adult in my years at the Oklahoma Baptist University, they continued to support me. They came to Shawnee to attend my senior recital right before I graduated. They took me shopping in Tulsa and helped me to purchase some items for my apartment that I would need as I moved to Texas to begin my teaching career.
In the most recent years, I truly enjoyed my phone conversations with Uncle Ray. After Aunt Mary Belle passed away, I knew that Uncle Ray would need encouragement. He and I would visit on the phone for close to an hour. We would both share memories. I was amazed at his excellent mind and memory; he was able to have wonderful conversations adding much detail and interest to the conversations. He had a wonderful sense of humor! I enjoyed his stories.
I am thankful that I was able to visit him in his last several years. It was my joy to see him when I made my annual trip to Tulsa each summer. He welcomed me and we had a good visit. I enjoyed taking him out to eat at his choice of restaurant.
I will cherish the memories I have of my Uncle Ray and Aunt Mary Belle. They loved me and I loved them. I am thankful that my last phone conversations with Uncle Ray were still filled with hope, encouragement, love, and joy. He was a very special person to me.
