Robert is survived by his devoted wife, Geraldine "Gerri" Downing, his son, Michael D. Downing, and stepdaughter, Mary Michelle DiTommaso. His presence was a source of joy and strength to them throughout his life.
Robert was predeceased by his parents, Durie Don Downing and Nettie Belle Downing, and his sister, Judith Atkinson. He is now reunited with them in the eternal embrace of the hereafter.
Robert had a deep passion for sports, particularly for all things related to the University of Oklahoma. His love for OU football and basketball was unmatched, and he cheered on the Dallas Cowboys with unwavering loyalty. He enjoyed the thrill of competition, whether it was on the fishing boat, the pool table, or the bowling alley, where his skill and good-natured competitiveness made him a beloved opponent.
A fixture in his community, Robert cherished the Friday morning gatherings with his neighbors as a member of his beloved men's coffee club. He found camaraderie, laughter, and friendship during those cherished moments, and he valued the bonds formed over cups of coffee.
Robert was dedicated to a healthy and active lifestyle. He could often be found at the local YMCA, where he started his day with exercise and invigorating workouts. His commitment to physical fitness was an inspiration to many.
In matters of faith, Robert was a charter member of Parkview Baptist Church, where he found spiritual solace and a loving community to share his beliefs. His faith was a cornerstone of his life, guiding him through the highs and lows.
Before becoming a cherished father and friend, Robert served his country with honor as a military police officer in the United States Army. He was deployed to Kaiserslautern, Germany, where he exemplified dedication, discipline, and service.
