Robert W. Powell's Obituary
Col. Robert W. Powell (USAF-Retired) was born on March 27, 1922 in Alfalfa County, Oklahoma. He passed away on April 7, 2015. A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church,(121 W. College St.) Broken Arrow, Oklahoma on Friday, April 10 at 10 a.m. Bob’s life is a legacy in leadership. He founded the Military History Museum at 112 N. Main in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, to honor our veterans and educate future generations about the importance of patriotism. Donations can be made to the Military History Museum. He is survived by his wife Lela Powell of Tulsa, two daughters Karen Martin of Claremont, California and Kathe Reh of Reno, Nevada and two granddaughters, two great grandsons, his brother James C. Powell of Tulsa of Tulsa. He was preceded in death by parents Mary Edith Harris Powell and Robert Wilson Powell, Sr. and brother (CPO) Jean Harris Powell, retired U.S. Navy Submarine Service. Bob graduated from Nowata High School and joined the Army Air Corp in 1940. He served his country for twenty-seven years in the Air Force. He served in WWII, Korea and Vietnam before his retirement in 1966. In WWII he served as a glider pilot in Operation Market Garden in 1944 where he was a sergeant in the 82nd Airborne Division. In 2013 and 2014 Powell traveled to Holland to commemorate the 70th anniversary of Market Garden.
