Robert Clifford Zane's Obituary
Zane, Robert Clifford, 72, died peacefully Sunday at home surrounded by loving family and friends. Born 29 October 1932 in Protection, Kansas, Mr. Zane later retired with honors from the United State Naval Submarine Service. During his naval career, which spanned both the Korean and Vietnam wars, he served on an aircraft carrier as well as both diesel and nuclear submarines. He served with many legends of the early nuclear navy, including Admiral Hyman Rickover and Captain Edward Beach; the latter with whom he completed the first submerged circumnavigation of the globe aboard the USS Triton in 1960, retracing the route originally charted by Ferdinand Magellan 441 years earlier. In later years, he also retired from the US Postal Service.
