Sally Ann Leigh's Obituary
Sally Ann Leigh,76, teacher and artist passed from this life on September 2, 2016 in Tulsa, OK surrounded by her loving family. Sally was born July 23, 1940 in Aitkin, MN to Al and Harriett (Salverda) Jwanouskos.Early years, in the youth group at Minneapolis Calvary Temple / Souls Harbor where She met Dee Sams who became a close lifelong friend and missionary. They sang in the T.V. choir and Sally “the Artist” painted back drop for the production. At age 14 on palm Sunday Sally and most of her family went forward to receive Christ as Savior from that point forward she shared her faith with every opportunity.College years, Sally travelled to Los Angeles in 1961 with Dee and Dee’s parents to attend the Bible Institute of Los Angeles (BIOLA) where she also met her husband to be, Merton Leigh. When he proposed marriage she (Sally) said “yes on two conditions: that I would finish college and you would iron your own shirts.” Well, she did and Perma-press rescued him. Graduating in 1966 with a B.S. in psychology and Elementary Education Sally taught in the Whitter School District helping pay Seminary expenses for Merton. She relished the role of pastor’s wife while at First Baptist, Buena Park, California. Son Steven 1964 and daughter Lynnet 1966 arrived.Next: Moving to San Francisco, she taught in a Christian school and found great fellowship at the First Covenant Church. Singing in the Choir, witnessing on the streets of San Francisco, Young Mothers Club and prayer with Bible study fellowship also Angela arrived 1975. Next: To Everett, Washington. First Covenant Church, where she picked up the artist brushes again and finally moved to Tulsa where son Steven was a student at Rhema Training Center. Sally preached in Okmulgee in place of Merton when needed and took occasional trips to the West Coast or the Caribbean. Always on the lookout for Art ideas.Sally is survived by her husband, Merton Leigh; children, Steven P. Leigh and his wife Rebeca, Lynnet M. Pals and her husband Todd, and Angela J. Chesnut and her husband Bryan; granddaughters, Grace Marie Leigh, Audrey Chesnut, and Sophie Chesnut; sisters, Anita Defries and her husband David, Irene Marlow and her husband Pat, Joanne Jwanouskos, Suzy Prikryl and her husband Rudy; brother Tony Jwanouskos. She was preceded in death by her parents, Al and Harriett Jwanouskos and brother, Al Jwanouskos.Things finished: College, teaching, painting, writing, rearing three wonderful children. Her children arise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her” ~ Prov. 31:28Sally, what a treasure you are, a spiritual force in my life, a Godly example in our home, a student of the word of God proficient in short hand, seamstress too. Talked both of us into taking Greek & Hebrew. While in Tulsa a member of Eul-tine handmaidens and in 1989 travelled to Israel, Rome and Paris / ministry opportunity a love of Israel and Jewish people. Loved to play hymns on piano and sing them with T.V. choir. You had Joy because you knew Jesus had died and rose again for you and is coming for you, forever his.
