Sarah Frances (Terry) Raine's Obituary
Sarah Frances (Terry) VanArsdale Raine, 82, of Bixby died April 21, 2021 at home with her family. Terry was born to Henry Albert VanArsdale and Viola Surface VanArsdale in Blue Ash, Ohio. Terry was salutatorian of her high school class in Perryville, KY and then attended nurses training at the Good Samaritan Hospital School of Nursing in Lexington, KY, graduating in 1959. She married Jesse E. Raine in 1959 in Lexington and he preceded her in death in 2018 after 59 years of marriage.
She is survived by children Michele Raine of Ohio, Kara Ralston of California (Darrell), and Dr. Randall Raine of Oklahoma (Cheryl); grandchildren Devin Raine, Aidan Raine, CJ Mischke, Cami Mischke, and Jordan Mischke of Oklahoma, and Courtney Ralston of California; sister Nancy VanArsdale Reed of Georgia; brother-in-law Luther Raine of Alabama; cousins Roxann Leo and her husband David Leo, and Connie Taylor of Kentucky; nephews Gary Reed, Jr., Van Reed and his wife Sylvia Reed, and Tracy Reed of Georgia; and great-nieces Elizabeth Williams and Carrie Gibson of Texas, and Robert Swindle.
Terry earned her bachelor's degree in nursing from the University of Tulsa and a master's degree in nursing from the University of Oklahoma all while raising her children. She worked for the Tulsa County Health Department as a visiting nurse and as the public health nurse in Bixby. She then retired from the Department of Veterans Affairs after working as the ambulatory clinic manager in Tulsa. She was also active in the Oklahoma Nurses Association.
Terry was a gifted needlework artist and loved to give away her cross-stitch quilts as gifts. She was famous for her Christmas cookies and loved the annual family gathering to decorate them. She shared her sense of humor with her “Terry Thoughts'' and was a warrior in her battle with cancer. She loved her iris garden and her bird feeder visitors. She was an extraordinary mother and living proof that you can rise above your circumstances to create the life you want. She truly embodied the instruction to "be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another."
Terry and J.E. were blessed to form life-long friendships with Stan and Bonnie Keithley and many other friends in the Truth. Terry and J.E. also formed lasting friendships with members of the Tulsa Classic Thunderbird Club, including Sandy and Steve Bingaman, Ollie and Virginia Harris, Barbara and Burr Kannady, Johnny and Shirley Nicholson, and Judy and Bill Parker. The card-playing gang and The Ladybird Lunches were a source of great pleasure to her, even as her health declined. Her family gratefully acknowledges the loving kindness shown by all her friends. The family also thanks Seasons Hospice for their loving care and support of Terry and the family, especially Todd, Kaitlin, and Joseph. Gifts may be made to Seasons Hospice in Terry’s honor.
