Sharon Dee Thompson's Obituary
Sharon Schirmer Thompson, age 80, passed from this life on December 30, 2025, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. She entered the world and began a legacy defined by compassion, strength, and service on January 30, 1945, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, born to D.E. and Jeanne Schirmer.
Sharon lived with a genuine heart and a spirit that radiated kindness. She devoted her professional life to helping others, working as a social worker with extraordinary dedication for over 27 years. Her work supporting individuals living with HIV/AIDS was not just a career but a calling. She believed deeply in education, health care access, advocacy, and dignity for those affected by the disease. She was one of two Oklahoma social workers who started the HIV/AIDS program for Oklahoma Department of Human Services with the passing of the Ryan White CARE Act in 1990. She then went on and helped other states form their HIV/AIDS programs ensuring more people had access to life saving medicine and social services while battling such a devastating disease at the time.
Sharon’s compassion extended far beyond her clients’ immediate needs; when a client passed, she made it her mission to ensure their beloved animals found safe and loving homes, carrying forward the legacy of those she served. Her expertise was so respected that professionals from other states often sought her guidance.
Outside of her work, Sharon found joy in the simple and beautiful parts of life. First and foremost, she loved her family. “Laura, Jim, and the kids,” as she lovingly referred to them, were the center of her world. No matter what stage of life they were in, Sharon took great joy in being part of it and celebrating what mattered to them. She was deeply proud of her granddaughters and spoke of them often with love and admiration.
Sharon also had an adventurous spirit, living in multiple states and countries when she was a young newlywed and mother. Later on, she treasured vacations to the beach, where she could relax, recharge, and enjoy time with the people she loved most.
Sharon was a light in many lives—steady, warm, and unwavering. Her impact will continue to be felt by all who knew her, and she will be deeply missed.
She is preceded in death by her parents D.E. “Dee” Schirmer and Jeanne (Patton) Schirmer, her son John Thompson, her sister Jean Ann Brinlee.
Left to cherish her memory is her daughter Laura J. McClain and her spouse Jim; grandchildren Colton, Riley and Mikala McClain, her sister Susan Hendrex, her nieces Katie Edwards, Leigh Dorsey and Sarah Hendrex, her life long best friend Bill Marrs, and her great nephews, great niece, cousins and brother in laws.
Sharon’s family wishes to extend our sincere gratitude to Sharon’s cherished and devoted caregiver, Julie Lee, who is a true blessing to our family for many years. We are forever grateful.
