Sherman Roy Jones' Obituary
Sherman Roy Jones, retired Superintendent and Maintenance Manager with the US Army Corp of Engineers and current resident of Broken Arrow, OK, died on December 26th, 2017 at the age of 66.Sherman is survived by his father, Melba Jones, 97, of Gore; wife, Diana Lynn Jones (née Matheny) of the home; sister, Cynthia Gale Marler of Gore; nephews, Derrick Neely, Brent Neely, Russell Chandler, Randall Chandler; and niece, Stephanie Marler. He is preceded in death by his mother, Delphine Verna Jones (née Rider) and sisters, Patricia Ann Kennedy and Linda Joyce Neely.Sherman was born on November 24th, 1951 in Muskogee, Oklahoma. He graduated from East Central High School in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1970. He enlisted in the Navy on February 2nd, 1973 and served as an aviation technician for four years, stationed in Kingsville, TX. He has said, “I joined the Navy to see the world, and all I saw was South Texas.” While in the Navy, he received an Associate’s Degree in Engineering Technology from Georgia Military College. Sherman married Diana, bank teller and pharmacist assistant, on April 7th, 1973 in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and has been a loving and devoted husband to her for 44 years.Sherman started his long career with the US Army Corp of Engineers on March 21st, 1977 as a Civil Engineering Technician GS-4 in the Tulsa District. He retired with the Corp on April 1st, 2011 from the Southwestern Division Office in Denison, Texas as a GS-13 in the Hydropower Program. Sherman knew everything there was to know about hydropower, having served at the Webbers Falls, Broken Bow, Tenkiller Ferry, Fort Gibson, Keystone and Denison Power Plants during his 38 years with the COE.Sherman’s hobbies over the years were numerous and included: working with electronics, flying, golfing, hunting, hiking, photography, computers, planting trees, geocaching, home remodeling and RV camping. He never turned down an opportunity to help his friends and family with any project they may need help with. He was a loving son, husband, brother, uncle and friend who will be dearly missed.Memorial services for Sherman will be held on Thursday, January 4, 2018, at 10:00 am at Floral Haven Funeral Home Chapel in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma (www.floralhaven.com).
