Stephen Brannon's Obituary
Steve was born June 23rd 1947 to the union of Harvey and Bernice (Bunch) Brannon. He passed away September 8th 2023 after a lengthy illness.
Steve is survived by his wife of 35 years, Anita; Brother Calvin (Loma) Brannon; 3 step children Scott (Kim) Erichsen, Kristyn (Nelson) Handcock, Monica (Darin) Tankersley, numerous nieces, nephews and grand children.
During his lifetime Steve worked in numerous fields but was most passionate about his career as the Crew Chief and Team Manager for the Lloyd K Stevens racing team, Ofixco, on The World of Outlaws racing circuit. There he was officially, and affectionately, known as “Maynard”. During his career with Ofixco he earned many accolades and awards for his knowledge and dedication to the sport. If there was racing being televised you would find him glued to the channel, often critiquing their performances.
Steve proudly served his country from 1967-1968 in the US Army during the Vietnam War. He received his first “Purple Heart” shortly after arriving in Vietnam. In 1968 he was seriously injured when he was hit by grenade shrapnel when his patrol was ambushed and surrounded by a large force of the enemy. The enemy fire was so heavy it prevented helicopters from assisting. Due to his heroic actions he was awarded his second “Purple Heart” and “The Presidential Citation for Bravery under Fire”.
Steve was a loving and devoted husband and friend to many. He will be sorely missed but will live in our hearts forever.
