Steven David Sims' Obituary
Steven David Sims was born August 27, 1955 in Durant, OK to Eli and Ila Jean Sims. He left this earth on March 22, 2017. He attended Durant High School and Southeastern Oklahoma State University in 1978. He was a member of the First Christian Church in Durant. Steven married Loraine Murphy of Dickson, OK in May 1978. They moved to San Marcos, TX where he received his Master’s Degree in Instrumental and Vocal Music. He taught school in Poteau, Mannford, and ended his 30 year teaching career at Catoosa. He remained in Tulsa after retiring to be near family. He spent much of his time visiting with his mother who moved from Durant to Broken Arrow in August, 2015. Steven was at one time a member of the First Presbyterian Church choir in Tulsa and a member of the Tulsa Opera Chorus. Preceding him in death was his father, Eli Sims, grandparents George and Ollie Mae Sims and James A. Hays and Ila Singletary Hays. Also uncles, James A. Hays and Elgin Sims, and a niece, Donna Hays Petter. Survivors include, mother Ila Jean Sims, formerly of Durant, a sister and her husband, Brian and Debra Cannon of Broken Arrow, OK, two nieces and their families, Max and Kaitlin Sherman and son Abel of Coweta, OK, Jesse and Kendall Hancock and twin sons Alder and Rowan, of Tulsa, OK. Also survived by an aunt and cousin, Maxine and Elaine Sims of Mena, AR, an aunt and cousin Georgia Hays, and Bill and Patricia Stevenson and their family of Olympia, WA and a cousin Michael and Gillian Hays and family from Juneau, AL. Flowers can be sent to the graveside service at Highland Cemetery in Durant or in lieu of flowers donations can be made to the First Christian Church in Durant. Family will be available for visitation before the graveside service from 12:30 to 2:00 pm at the First Christian Church. A graveside service will be held on Thursday, March 30th, at 2:30 pm at Highland Cemetery in Durant
