Velma Nathalee Day's Obituary
Velma Nathalee McMurry Day, 95, was born on January 28, 1926 in Loving Township, Heavener, LeFlore Co., OKlahoma and passed on October 1, 2021 in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. She had blond hair and blue eyes and loved to sing. Velma's childhood nickname was Bunnie- it even says Bunnie on her first report card. Nathalee is an Indian name meaning "little princess with tiny feet dancing on a cloud".
She finished Jay High School in three years, and was a member of the Honor Society in 1942 and 1943 and was also a Class Poet in 1943. She and her sister Helen graduated together.
Velma finished Western Union Operator's School in half the regular time and at the age 0f 19 became the youngest Re-Perf Operator in Western Union history. During WWII, she was a Riveter at Douglas Aircraft in Tulsa and was CHampion Riveter of the Department. She also worked as Station Auditor at American Airlines, Air Freigh Division in Tulsa; at the U.S. Army in Fort, Chaffee in Arkansas and won an award for improving filing system. For three years, Velma worked as a Medical Coordinator and wond awards and special advancement for efficiency.
Velma and Billy Eugene Day married on March 24, 1950 in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Velma had several poems and articles published in several periodicals-
in 1978 and and 1988 she was listed as the "Who's Who in American Poetry" and in 1996 she was selected to appear in "The Best Poems of the '90's".
She is survived by her children Sharon, Bill, Carol, and Dennis; and 49 descendants.
