Velma La Verne Grizzle's Obituary
Velma La Verne (Cooper) Grizzle Velma La Verne Grizzle passed away August 20, 2012, at The Villages at Southern Hills in Tulsa, Oklahoma. She was born March 8, 1922, to John and Mary (Jenkins) Cooper in Archey, Arkansas. After graduation from high school in Seminole, Oklahoma she attended Seminole Junior College, Oklahoma Baptist University, and Oklahoma A&M (now Oklahoma State University). She graduated in 1945 with a degree in Vocational Home Economics. She taught Home Economics in high schools in Kansas (La Crosse) and Oklahoma (Granite, Tipton, and Meeker) before moving to Broken Arrow where she taught Special Education for 15 years. She retired in 1984. Velma met Herman Grizzle while in college and they were married June 1, 1947. They had two sons, John and David, and they raised Herman's half-sister, Christine. Velma was a member of the First Baptist Church in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, since 1969, where she taught Sunday school and was active in several church organizations. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and brother (John). She is survived by her sons and their wives, John and Cindy (Brunner) of Camp Hill, Alabama, and David and Karen (Jensen), of Chelsea, Oklahoma; grandsons, Jeffrey (Erin) and Daniel; great-granddaughter, Annie; and a sister, Jean Sallee of Houston, Texas. Visitation will be held 10:00 a.m. ' 9:00 p.m. Friday, August 24, 2012, at Floral Haven Funeral Home, Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. Family will receive visitors from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Floral Haven. Funeral Service will be held Saturday, August 25, 2012, at 10:00 a.m. at Floral Haven Funeral Home Chapel, Broken Arrow with Rev. Nick Garland officiating. Interment will be at Floral Haven Memorial Gardens.
