Walter English's Obituary
Walter “Sonny” Mike English, a resident of Tulsa, passed away October 7, 2017 at the age of 88. He was born November 29, 1928 to Oscar and Minnie (Pareno) English in Lehigh, Oklahoma.Walter started building his strong work ethic at age 7, with a paper route that he continued until his teen years. During high school, he worked for Shawnee Ice, later owning his own ice route. He met his wife, Helen Ash, after graduating Shawnee High School in 1946. They were married November 20, 1949. He was drafted and served in the Army from 1952-1954, stationed in California at Camp Roberts and Camp Stoneman. Upon returning to Shawnee he began his 35 plus year career with Firestone Tire and Rubber Co.He enjoyed making others happy and feeding everyone. Most of all he treated everyone like they were his family/best friend. He especially enjoyed doting on his grandchildren. He spent countless hours giving the kids wagon rides around the block, and pulling them back up the hill after sledding. He always kept their favorite foods on hand…..black olives, beef jerky, sunflower seeds, mini candy bars, cookies, bacon and an endless supply of ice cream and ice cream cones. He was a member of Memorial Drive United Methodist Church and he enjoyed watching his Dallas Cowboys and Sooners play football.He was preceded in death by his parents, Buster and Minnie Clark; infant daughter, Laura Ellen English and son, Jeffrey Douglas English.Survivors include his loving wife of 67 years, Helen English; two daughters, Liz Rice and husband, Earle and Cindy Wiegers and husband, Chris; grandchildren, Chris Rice and wife, Jenny, Brian Rice, Austin Jones and wife, Shelby, Sarah Rice, Jeremy Jones and wife, Taylor, Shawn Wiegers and wife, Brynna, Tanner Wiegers and Makenzie Wiegers; great grandchildren, Iris Jones and Natalie Jones; brother, Hershall Clark and wife, Christine; sister, Margaret Criss and several nieces and nephews.Memorial Services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Friday, October 13, 2017 at Floral Haven Funeral Home Chapel in Broken Arrow with Reverend Jim Lee officiating.A Reception will follow the service from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Floral Haven Family Center.
